Utility Location

  • The costliest excavations are the ones you didn’t need to do.
  • We use the most advanced technology to deliver the most accurate results.

With RMA GeoScience, you’ll know the location of utility lines before you begin digging, drilling, or trenching. It’s a fast, accurate, and non-invasive way to save both costs and time by avoiding costly collisions with utilities and other underground obstructions. While calling 811 and local utility companies is always a best pre-excavation practice, RMA can find and classify private utilities that may not be covered by 811.

How does RMA GeoScience work?

RMA GeoScience uses electromagnetic location – the most sophisticated, efficient, and cost-effective way to detect and identify underground utilities.

What is electromagnetic location?

In simplest terms, it works by detecting the magnetic field surrounding a utility system. A radio frequency is produced using a transmitter to capture and record those signals. Because the conductivity of different utility structures and materials can vary, RMA GeoScience uses several methods and tools to address and accurately identify and map them:
• Using Direct Connect, our technicians can connect a transmitter directly to a utility or tracer wire to transmit information about electrical, communication and gas lines to an above-surface receiver.
• If a direct connection to a utility isn’t possible, we use Direct Induction to send signals through the surface to the utility and back to the transmitter
• We can accurately identify non-metallic utilities such as storm drains, waste lines and vacant conduits using Sonde – tools like push cameras, crawler cameras, and ramrods with locatable radio transmitters for accurate identification.

What happens once utilities are located?

After a comprehensive scan that reveals the depth, location, and type of utilities beneath a job site, RMA technicians mark them directly on the job surface in industry-standard colors with paint (or chalk or wax for finished or decorative surfaces).

How do I know my results are accurate?

Because we use the industry’s most advanced electromagnetic equipment to deliver the most exact data possible. Our system and electronics are designed for maximal thermal stability and durability – key features that minimize signal drift and other issues common with other equipment. With RMA GeoScience, you can count on reliable utility location every time.
