What is construction materials testing?

Construction materials testing is the evaluation of materials used to build new structures, or to change or expand them. It can also involve testing the qualifications of the people involved in the construction process. In addition to ensuring the safety and proper use of building materials, construction materials testing is very often required by law.

What types of materials does RMA GeoScience test?

The materials and processes we test vary greatly based on the project, its site, and the scope of the undertaking. That’s why RMA GeoScience’s capabilities cover more than a dozen comprehensive evaluations, including mix design and quality testing of aggregate, asphalt, and concrete. We also provide conformance and quality testing of masonry, reinforcing and structural steel, as well as welder qualification tests.

Why is construction materials testing important?

As with geological engineering tests, construction materials testing ensures the safety and long-term viability of construction projects. Construction materials testing can reveal quality issues as well as anticipate risks, provide valuable input on engineering decisions, and assist in classifying buildings. In short, it lets builders know if their project meets all applicable quality and safety requirements.

Where does construction materials testing take place?

Testing can take place in the field or in the lab. Field testing is done on highway, utility, airport, and many other project sites. It usually involves visual examination of soil, timber, steel, concrete and asphalt for air and moisture content and compaction. When field tests indicate more extensive analysis is necessary, lab testing provides precise measurement of soil (swell, strength, pH, shear, conductivity, etc.); asphalt (stability, gradation, density, etc.); and masonry (flex and compression strength, absorption, efflorescence, etc.) and more.
